I can never betray Jon Stunner denies causing split in troubled Tudors star’s love life On the couch with Fiona Sunday, 1 March 2009 Katie Larmour interview with Fiona Hurley. Katie Larmour interview with Fiona Hurley. * Photos enlarge * Print Print * Email Email Search Search Go Bookmark & Share * Digg It * del.icio.us * Facebook * Stumbleupon What are these? Change font size: A | A | A UTV's newest golden girl Katie Larmour is hurt by claims she was responsible for the break-up of Tudors heart-throb Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ relationship. The gorgeous model and presenter has been the subject of much tabloid talk after she was recently photographed with the Hollywood star in Paris. This led to her being branded ‘the other woman’ when he split from his long-term girlfriend Reena Hammer. Rhys Meyers has been in the headlines recently over a much-publicised stint in rehab as he battles the booze. But despite my playful goading for some juicy gossip and glorious titbits on the subject, the stunning 25-year-old South Belfast beauty — who says she’s currently single — declines to comment about rumours linking the two romantically. Although she did say the rumours were “ridiculous” and “hurtful”. She says: “I'm really sorry, but I don't want to talk about Jonathan and I never will. “It's not that he would mind me saying anything, but I personally think that it would be wrong. “I'm happy to speak openly about myself, but you have to think and hold back when someone else is involved. “If I start talking about that stuff now it would be hypocritical of me to later expect immunity from public interest in my personal life. “I truly believe someone's private life should remain private. Jonathan and I are friends and I don't want to jeopardise that,” she adds. Behind Katie's sweet, wholesome and beautiful exterior — and despite her jokes that she's now an edgy, hard-core ‘rock chick' — it quickly became apparent there’s actually a sweet, wholesome, beautiful AND intelligent interior. Despite being a petite, but perfectly-formed 5ft 5ins, Katie embarked on a modelling career while diligently achieving her fine art degree from the University of Ulster's Belfast campus. At this point I feel the urge to take some credit for her pursuing modelling and thankfully, Katie fully agreed! Having been introduced to Katie in TaTu Bar on the Lisburn Road many years ago, I was asked to advise her regarding her suitability for modelling. With a face that could adorn beauty magazines and front commercial advertising campaigns, I recommended that she immediately contact my agency, Style Academy. It was pretty obvious even back then that Katie would make an impact, especially with her outgoing personality and distinctly modest demeanour. Fashion guru Cathy Martin, managing director of CMPR and organiser of the West Coast Cooler's Belfast Fashion Week — for which Katie is the public face, says: “Katie is such a beautiful girl. “She can be the pretty girl next door, or the sexy siren. She can be totally transformed but her look always appeals to the masses. “This is why I chose her for the billboards advertising my event and I've received excellent feedback on the campaign.” Katie has also won the global, but less well-known beauty competition Formula Una, in which she represented Silverstone and Great Britain in the Brazilian final. “It was a fantastic opportunity. I loved it at the time and I still have friends that I can visit from all the participating countries,” she says. Katie was eventually offered an internship with the Bonham gallery at the same time as the presenting job for UTV. She has no regrets about taking the TV role, saying: “There really was no competition. “I can always revisit working in galleries if things in presenting don't go according to plan, but this was a job of a lifetime.” Katie's new show, Live at The Limelight, which is on UTV on Wednesday nights at 10.50pm, gives fresh, new music talent the platform to perform and demonstrate their wares. Her ideal job, which would encompass all of her passions and interests, is that of being a children's presenter. And stepping into Zoe Salmon's shoes on Blue Peter would be the ultimate coup. But Katie reckons: “It's highly unlikely that they'd replace Zoe immediately with another Northern Irish girl but I can always dream.” She likes the idea of becoming really famous. “I hate admitting it because it sounds so big-headed, but I love getting attention,” she says. “I suppose I'm in an ideal position to satisfy that now with presenting the show.” She admits to loving the London party scene. She’s hung out with F1 champ Lewis Hamilton; she’s also friendly with F1 star Jenson Button and his partner; and she’s spent evenings in the company of Hollywood star Kevin Spacey and Cameron Diaz’s ex, Jared Leto. As for her perfect man, Katie fancies someone quirky and unusual like the strange-looking, gothic-styled Noel Fielding from The Mighty Boosh. But Katie reveals that she has a hot date lined up in London — and that she's really looking forward to it. “If I hear of any more juicy details, I’ll let you know!” n If you are in a band that is destined for stardom, or you simply wish to feast your senses on the beautiful Miss Larmour, watch Live at The Limelight, Wednesday nights at 10.50pm on UTV. http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sunday-life/i-can-never-betray-jon-14209011.html

SITTING in loose, hippie garb, far removed from the tight costume constraints attached to her royal role in The Tudors, Joss Stone has one thing on her mind. "I don't ming ... do I?'' inquires the petite chanteuse-turned-actress. The answer, quite simply, is no. Stone's decision to question her looks (to "ming'' is UK speak for ugly) may seem unusual but, in context, is more than valid. Stone has joined The Tudors (series three debuts this week) as Anne of Cleves, a queen ultimately rejected by Henry VIII because of her plain looks. "Yeah, look, obviously I can play a minger really well,'' Stone says, speaking exclusively to Insider. "To me, it didn't really matter what role I got. I just wanted to be part of it. It's a brilliant series, with excellent actors.'' Stone, 22 - who shot to fame in 2003 as a singer with a mature and soulful sound that belied her then 16 years - said her decision to try acting was born out of fun. '"I don't like to take it too seriously. I just roll with the punches and just do whatever comes up,'' she says. She was adamant however that music remained her strongest passion. The sexed up third series of The Tudors - starring the impossibly handsome Jonathan Rhys Meyers - debuts this Wednesday on Showcase at 8.30pm. Waley takes the flak FORMER Nine newsreader Jim Waley re-enters the 6pm news stoush from tomorrow - on an extended stay at Sky. Back at work four years after he was unceremoniously dumped from Nine, Waley was openly excited about fronting Sky's new national 2-hour daily service. However it was the whereabouts of his famed flak jacket that most intrigued this columnist. It's not lost, said Waley of the sky blue zip-up (his Iraqi attire) that caused much amusement a few years back. He even hinted a future twirl in it. "I'd never rule anything out. People laugh about that but going into war zones is a serious business. When you go into these places you normally have a security guy with you and if he says put on your flak jacket you do as he says.'' We agree. Ferguson tight-lipped IS Nine worried about unleashing Mark Ferguson? This columnist was denied a chat with ``Fergo'' (who hasn't spoken publicly of being bumped by Peter Overton earlier this year) ahead of the launch of his current affairs offering This Afternoon (from tomorrow, weekdays, 4.30pm). Co-hosts Andrew Daddo and Catriona Blowers were available but we were told Ferguson is ``not a spokesperson for the show. He's the newsreader and doesn't feel in a position to talk about the show at this time''. Strange - he features heavily in the program's promos. Ultimately, Nine's latest news boss, affable Englishman Mark Calvert, was trotted out, which was odd again given his reluctance to talk. Calvert refused to discuss the reasons for Overton's 6pm elevation: "The way I look at it, you've got the two best guys reading the news seven nights a week'' - and spoke favourably of departing news chief John Westacott. He did, however, admit "fresh air'' was finally being inhaled in the news department. Calvert also said ACA host Tracy Grimshaw would be doing more live interviews, labelled Today Tonight's Matt White ``vanilla'' and said his news reporters would start to set agendas. Calvert confirmed Westacott would return as an adviser after a holiday and already had ``several strong ideas''. Overton and Ferguson, he said, would also be seen ``on the road more.'' Waley may need to relinquish the flak jacket. Pacific war ignited FEATURING 10 Aussie actors, Steven Spielberg's HBO TV war epic The Pacific will be launched in the US in March and be seen here soon after, a Seven spokeswoman said. Its first online trailer is here. Everett heart surgery CHANNEL Ten's Peter Everett will undergo surgery tomorrow to insert a pacemaker after his heart stopped more than three times last week. The host of Ready Steady Cook told Insider he was on set filming for the show last Tuesday when his heart stopped. "I was still conscious, but I felt really faint,'' Everett said. He said he would be back at work within the week, despite doctors ordering him to rest for at least three weeks. http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,25701056-5006014,00.html

He’s the rock and roll king, the velvet goldmine ruler, the sex god monarch. Showtime’s Henry VIII, as gloriously personified by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, is back for his third lascivious season in The Tudors. Once again all the hallmarks of this franchise are lavishly evident on the screen: stunning costumes, elaborate settings, sumptuous locations, passionate performances and sexed-up storytelling. If medieval England was to have its very own Days of Our Lives, this would be it (one character even sports an eyepatch). Power, greed, lust, envy, romance -it’s all here in spades. Having eliminating his second wife, Henry now turns his attention to his third, Jane Seymour (Annabelle Wallis), determined that she bear him a male heir. At the same time he advances Protestant Reformation throughout the kingdom, attacking Catholic monasteries and churches. But there is wide dissent, with commoners staging a revolt in response to his crackdown. In echoes of Braveheart, thousands arm themselves in readiness for a sweeping uprising. Thomas Cromwell (James Frain) endeavours to guide Henry as his steady advisor, but his short-tempered King demonstrates little time for reason. Against these power games there are also chess-like manoeuvers from writer Michael Hirst. Henry also compels his daughter Mary (Sarah Bolger) to swear allegiance, fearful she may one day become Queen of England. In Rome Cardinal von Waldburg (Max Von Sydow) urges Henry’s cousin to return to England to extend the Pope’s influence over the new Queen. There are some roles that define actors and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is clearly in his element as Henry, portraying him as an outrageous and uncompromising ruler. He shifts from breathing fire to sexual panther, with consummate ease. He is supported by an outstanding ensemble, impeccable production values and a lush score. This season singer Joss Stone will also appear in her first acting role as Anne of Cleves. The Tudors is a televisual seven deadly sins. A jewel in pay television’s crown. http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2009/06/the-tudors-2.html

A cast of Irish nominees will be hoping to turn the red carpet green at this year's Emmy Awards. Top actors Brendan Gleeson and Gabriel Byrne are among a host of nominees who have been shortlisted for the prestigious award ceremony. The Irish Film Board may be facing the chop after yesterday's An Bord Snip Nua report, but the industry was still celebrating last night. Irish directors, actors and crews will see their names up in lights across Hollywood in September for the Primetime Emmy Awards. Popular TV3 drama The Tudors will be in with several chances of taking home a gong. The show, which stars Jonathan Rhys Myers, has received five nominations. It is the third consecutive year that the show will be vying for top honours from the Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences. Hat-trick Costume designer Joan Bergin and wardrobe supervisor Susan O'Connor Cave will even be looking for a hat-trick of victories, having won in the Outstanding Costumes For A Series category in 2007 and 2008. Irish director Dearbhla Walsh, who is currently filming the latest series of The Tudors in Dublin, has been shortlisted for her work on the BBC drama Little Dorrit. Our actors continue to shine on the international stage with nominations for some of our best-known faces. Golden Globe winner Brendan Gleeson receives his first Emmy nomination for his performance as Winston Churchill in Into the Storm. He is nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Mini-series Or A Movie category. Irish-born actor Kenneth Branagh will be competing in the same category for his role in Wallander: One Step Behind. However, the duo face stiff competition from Kiefer Sutherland (24), Kevin Kline (Cyrano de Bergerac), Ian McKellen (King Lear) and Kevin Bacon (Taking Chance). In Treatment star Gabriel Byrne has been nominated for a second year running for his role as Paul. The shortlisting of the HBO drama is another victory for TV3, who bought the rights to show it in Ireland. Counterparts Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Hugh Laurie (House), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Simon Baker (The Mentalist) are also shortlisted for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series. In the Outstanding Art Direction For A Single-Camera Series category, the Irish team of production designer Tom Conroy, art director Colman Corish and set director Crispian Sallis are nominated alongside their counterparts working on the US series Bones, Heroes, Mad Men, Pushing Daisies and True Blood. Irish casting agents Nuala Moiselle and Frank Moiselle have been named alongside their US colleagues for their casting work on The Tudors, which is filmed entirely on location in Ireland. IFTA winning hair stylist Dee Corcoran and DOP Ousama Rawi have also been nominated for their work behind the scenes. And Irish director Thaddeus O'Sullivan is among the nominees for Outstanding Directing For A Mini-series, Movie Or A Dramatic Special for his work on the HBO drama Into the Storm, which followed the post-war life of Winston Churchill. The glitzy award ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 20. http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/film-cinema/our-stars-of-film-and-tv-to-take-the-emmys-by-storm--just-as-bord-snip-says-pull-their-funding-1827232.html

Отправлено: 28.07.09 18:18. Заголовок: Costume designer Joa..
Costume designer Joan Bergin's own wardrobe choices have not always mirrored her colourful career, writes Andrea Smith. After sculpting Dublin nightclubs and dressing stars like Brad Pitt, David Bowie and Scarlett Johansson, she recently won two Emmys for her opulent creations on The Tudors When people ask why she always dresses in black, award-winning costume designer Joan Bergin has a suitably theatrical response. "I'm in mourning for my life," she laughs, borrowing the line from Masha in Chekhov's The Seagull. She's only joking, of course, because life is great for the celebrated costume designer, who has won two Emmy Awards for the hit TV series, The Tudors. There's an element of disguise to always wearing black, she says, and her love for it began in the Seventies. She travelled the world promoting the best of Irish emerging design, through carpet makers Irish Ropes and Coras Trachtala, and it was a heady odyssey of exposure to great design in furniture, galleries, and fashion. "It centred my own style and gave me a lifelong interest in architecture," she says. "I used to joke that I left wearing rose pink, and returned to wear only neutrals for the rest of my life. Now it's all black -- lazy perhaps, but a reassuringly quick grab at 5.30 in the morning. And yet if I go to buy anything new, it looks better in black. Much better. It sure helps me to understand addiction!" She also always wears a hat, which started when she was working in Australia and wore the Akubra there. Another signature piece is one of her collection of unusual ties, to which friends love to add. When I meet her, she's wearing a sparkly silver one. In person, Joan is warm and engaging, and she takes great care of you if you're a visitor to her costume room. She brings me on set, where a gorgeous ballroom scene is being filmed, and introduces me to everyone. Then she asks someone to show me the breathtaking scene that was filmed that morning -- where the wicked Henry VIII publicly introduces his new love Jane Seymour, just after Anne Boleyn has been beheaded. And then it's off to the costume room, where a spectacular sight assails the eye. I could have spent hours among the dozens of rails of amazing costumes, which transport you to a world where sexual intrigue and dastardly plots reign supreme. And as for the hundreds of fabulous necklaces, brooches, headpieces and accessories laid out on tables -- I so wanted to steal every last one of them. The costumes are made for the principals and rented for the extras, while accessories are borrowed from everywhere. That's the advantage of having a hit show, says Joan. Everyone is willing to lend you things. It came as a surprise to me to learn that Joan is no seamstress, so her team is responsible for turning her vision into reality on a daily basis. There are 22 altogether, between the workshop and wardrobe, and as you pass through they are all working away -- sewing, fitting, and adjusting. "I can just about sew, so I'm very dependent on them to interpret what I do," she says. "I think I'm a good boss, and I put tremendous store in having a successful working relationship with the crew around me. I'd like to think they feel they have collaborated in the success we've had." If you rewound the years, however, and saw the schoolgirl Joan Bergin at the Dominican School in Cabra, you would never have picked her out for her sense of style. "Quite the opposite," she says. "The ribbon in my hair would always be half askew, and I was so untidy in school that the nun sent for my mother." Joan had a teacher called Sister Mary Jude for six years, and hers was a kind of experimental class, with an emphasis on the arts. Anyone who had a talent was encouraged, and this, Joan says, is where she blossomed. "I was in the choir in the class, which the others called 'Judy's Boasters' because we were always going off somewhere," she laughs. "I was incredibly shy as a child, but always had a very strong sense of self." After school, Joan started working in furniture design, and then began acting. She loved it, but everything changed when, in a small company where everyone did everything, she agreed to do costumes for Leonid Andreyev's play, He Who Gets Slapped. Noel Pearson saw the show and asked her to do some work for him, and then she started doing some interior architecture. "I went through a phase of designing every nightclub in Dublin," she says. "Lillie's Bordello was my whole concept because I decided that Judge Roy Bean had this fantasy to offer Lillie Langtry something superb like a salon." By then, Joan had realised that she was never going to make a career in acting, but it took her a long time to let go of the aspiration. "Or more honestly, a long time to recognise that I would never be an amazing actor," she says. "I haven't a great speaking voice, because it's very light, so I was quite good at it, without being great." Joan has worked with many famous people, and a few of them have made an impression on her. "Day-Lewis is such a superb artist, and Brad Pitt is just the nicest person to work with," she says. "Bowie came in looking like an out-of-work dancer from the New York Ballet, and that was the only time ever that my knees nearly went." "I did The Prestige in LA with Scarlett Johansson, and she was lovely," she adds. "She had this hairless Chihuahua in her bag though, and it would yap like mad every time I went over to her. And even though I like dogs, I thought he was stretching it a little bit." And what of Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who has attracted some attention recently for his off-screen antics? "We have a very sound working relationship," she says. "He's like a rock star really, and I'm sure Henry was like that too in his time. Many artists like Jonny are not the calmest people around, but that's what drives their mojo! I often think to myself, glory be to God if he didn't like my designs, because he has to change his clothes about eight times a day. "And I think it's incredibly brave of him to interpret a king that he doesn't even vaguely look like," she adds. "You'd only have to look at him to know that the clothes are going to look great on him -- sure, his waist is smaller than mine!" Joan's partner is journalist Kevin O'Connor, and she credits him with keeping the home fires burning while she's away on location. "I think it takes a very generous person to accept that this is what feeds you and keeps you going," she says. "You can get so wrapped up in what you're doing at work, that when someone says that the cat needs to go to the vet, you almost think, 'Do we have a cat?'" Aside from work, family is the other big love of Joan's life. She doesn't have children, she says, because by the time she got around to thinking about having a child, the window of opportunity had passed. "I think I was a terribly slow developer," she says. "I really love children, as often happens when you don't have any, and I get on great with all the ones around me. I consider myself so lucky to be so close to my family, and often look around the table on Christmas Day, and think, 'I'm a lucky bugger!'" While Joan won two well-deserved Emmys for the costumes, she credits the writers with helping her to bring the perfect balance of historical accuracy and modern sensibility to the clothes. And as it happens, history was her best subject at school, and she researches every character thoroughly. Joan's wonderful work can currently be seen in the beautiful costumes in Riverdance, which was one of her favourite projects of all. She didn't design the original costumes, so it was a challenge to come into a show that was already a success and put her mark on it. "When it started off, the costumes were more minimalist and a wonderful look for that time," she says. "We had to present more historical detail in the costumes by the time they took the show to Broadway because the whole Celtic Tiger thing had come in. It's important to interpret for the time that people are at, otherwise the clothes become museum pieces." And despite having seen the show a million times, Joan still gets moved at every performance. "I remember bringing the producer/director Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Good Morning Vietnam) to it, and he found himself in tears at the big numbers. It was to do with the sense of hope that Riverdance brings, with young people tapping themselves out into the world in negative times." As for the future, Joan says she'd love to write something on the vexing question of interesting style choices for older women. "If we accept that slip dresses with acres of exposed flesh is not the answer, than neither is a shapeless cotton jersey," she says. "Where are the pieces in the high street shops? You could take out a loan and only dress in steel grey Yamamoto with silver jewellery. But, mixing metaphors and borrowing from Shirley Conran, is life too short to stuff a mushroom?" Riverdance, Gaiety Theatre, until August 30. http://www.independent.ie/lifestyle/the-woman-in-black-1841387.html

The boys in their bloomers are back in town; yes The Tudors lads took a break from filming raunchy scenes to mingle at the launch of the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland. Lisa popped along to meet the cast to talk beards, bodices and booze... When it comes to filmmaking, Xpose is always on the money. Tonight is no different at the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland honouring some of Ireland's top filmmakers and some of the cast and crew from The Tudors turned out to lend their support! Lisa caught up with the hunky Henry Cavill, Rod Hallet and Andrew Mc Nair who were glad to be out of their bloomers! So what is the event all about? Henry talked about finding a new young Irish director (but it seemed like Henry had memorised a press release) and was getting a mocking from his fellow Tudors colleagues as a result. But what caught our eyes were there big burly bushy beards. Between this series and the last a lot of time has past and it is seen as a rather quick and easy way of looking a little older. They may be getting older but that hasn't stopped the raunchiness. Henry said that he had many more raunchy scenes in season one but not as many in recent seasons. With all that bodice ripping in the gilded armour it must be well... "heavy and hot" according to the Tudor boys. The all important burning question is how is the king? Or rather Jonathon Rhys Myers? Henry insisted that Jonathon was well, it is always fantastic working with him as he is great fun and a good help. So what about the incident of his little arrest in Paris? Well they insisted that a look a like has been flying around and causing trouble and insisted he was fine. Tudors director Ciaran Donnelly explained what the night was really about. They try to make sure that Irish directors are kept working, paid well ,get what they deserve and the talent of people get opportunities to do great work at home or abroad. Great news for the Irish filmmaking community. What about the heaving bosom female cast members that were sure to be glad of a night rest away from the king. Joanne King who plays Lady Rochford explained how its unusual to have a night off but they were in the next morning at 6am. Tudors star and Jim Sheridan muse, Sarah Bolger was also in attendance. She explained how much she likes working with Jim Sheridan and sees him as a quasifather. The final season of The Tudors is back on TV3 early next year. http://www.tv3.ie/article.php?article_id=17877&locID=1.65.68.272.&pagename=news

Joely Richardson has landed a key role in the fourth and final season of Showtime's "The Tudors." The cable network announced on Wednesday (July 22) that the "Nip/Tuck" star will play Catherine Parr, Henry VIII's (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) sixth wife. Was Catherine Parr the woman who finally claimed Henry VIII's heart? Well, she was his last bride, so feel free to hope for a happy ending, "Tudors" fans. [More historically inclined readers will know that Catherine, nearly as nuptially prolific as Henry VIII, was Queen at the time of Henry VIII's death in 1547 and that their marriage was tempestuous.] "The Tudors" is currently shooting in Dublin and will premiere in 2010. Richardson will appear in five episodes. The Showtime press release notes that being part of a royal dynasty isn't foreign to Richardson, daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and Tony Richardson, niece to Lynn Redgrave and sister to the late Natasha Richardson. She's also played Marie-Antoinette in "The Affair of the Necklace" and Princess Anna in the classic "King Ralph." Richardson has earned a pair of Golden Globe nominations for her performance as Julia on "Nip/Tuck," which returns to FX this fall. http://www.hitfix.com/articles/2009-7-22-the-tudors-crowns-nip-tuck-co-star-queen

Galway actress Tara Breathnach has landed a role in The Tudors, the racy period drama starring Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the young Henry VIII. Tara will play a lady in waiting to Sarah Bolger’s Lady Mary in the fourth series of the historical dram which will be broadcast on TV3 next spring. Tara began her acting career in Galway Youth Theatre and graduated from the Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff in 2004. She then went on to work in films with Connemara based director Bob Quinn and star as bad girl Tina O’Dowd in TG4’s Ros Na Run. Recently Tara landed a role in The Tudors, although it is only a small part. “Small role! Big dress!” she laughs. Nonetheless she is very excited about it and about starring alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Peter O’Toole. “We have a big court scene to shoot soon and everyone will be there,” she says. “I’m dying to be part of it. It will be lovely.” Given that this is The Tudors which revels in reliving and reconstructing the saucy antics of the randy aristocracy that ruled 16th century England, is Tara’s virtue in danger? “There’ll be no bosoms in my scenes,” she says. “I’ll be a lady in waiting for Lady Mary, Henry VIII’s daughter, who’s very Catholic, so I think I’ll be safe!” http://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/15141

Cecelia's David wins big break in TV's Tudors CECELIA Ahern's partner David Keoghan is to join Jonathan Rhys Meyers in sizzling historical drama The Tudors. The Herald can reveal the athlete-turned-actor, who is expecting his first baby with the chick-lit writer, has nabbed a role in the new instalment of the hit series. Although he has had parts in some small independent films, this is his first role in such a massive series and has been hailed as his "big break". An excited David attended the Galway Races earlier this week, in the company of Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating and Cecelia's dad, former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. He said he was relishing getting his teeth stuck into such a major part. He said: "I can't say too much about it because it hasn't aired yet, but I'm filming a lot with David O'Hara, the crazy Scottish guy from Braveheart, which probably tells you a lot about my part." He was also quick to show his support for co-star Rhys Meyers, who has fought a well-publicised battle with the booze. He said: "I've actually known him for years and I think he's a lovely guy, he's a great actor. "The series has been running for five years and it's great to get some work on it." Now, all eyes will be on the new instalment of the drama series based on the bed-hopping antics of King Henry VIII, to see if David can cut the mustard in the thespian stakes. Two years ago, he announced his intention to carve out a career as an actor after completing a drama course. He's also due to become a first-time dad in December. "I'm absolutely delighted -- and you can quote me on that," he told the Herald. "My brother's got four kids and my young brother has one kid and, obviously, Nicky and Georgina have the twins, so when we got on holidays, there's kids everywhere. I can change a nappy with one hand!" However, he was keeping mum when quizzed if he now planned to pop the question to his beautiful partner of more than six years. The baby will be the third grandchild for former Taoiseach Bertie and his ex-partner Miriam, following the birth of twins Rocco and Jay to the author's sister Georgina Ahern and her husband Nicky Byrne. mfinn@herald.ie http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/around-town/cecelias-david-wins-big-break-in-tvs-tudors-1849094.html

Screen writer Michael Hirst to host Tudor talks at Acomb Library A BAFTA-nominated screen writer will be dropping in to a York library to give locals a slice of Tudor history. Michael Hirst is the man behind the popular television drama, The Tudors, starring Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry VIII. Michael’s film credits also include The Ballad Of The Sad Café, Fools Of Fortune which starred Julie Christie; and Elizabeth, starring Cate Blanchett, which was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture. He will be holding a talk at Explore Acomb Library Learning Centre at 7pm on August 21 entitled, Henry VIII: When The Fat Man Sings. During the hour-long talk, the writer will reveal more about The Tudors and the colourful life of Henry VIII and his court. This is a chance for members of the public to put questions to Michael and help bring history to life. Alison Morgan, reading development librarian, at York Central Library, said: “This is the first time Michael’s been to York to give a talk and he’s really keen to come here. “We thought that his take on the Tudors would be different than some of the other authors and historians who are featuring in our Tudors history programme.” The Big City Read, storyteller Anna O’Brien will be telling Tales Of The Tudors in York Library on Monday, 17 August. Michael’s visit ties in with York’s Big City Read an annual event organised by City of York Council, where residents are encouraged to read the same book and then take part in event celebrating the chosen novel. This year people are being invited to read C J Sansom’s Sovereign, a murder mystery set in Tudor York at the time of The Coming of the King’s Grace – Henry VIII’s great northern progress. Tickets to see Michael Hirst can be purchased by ringing York Library on 01904 655631 or Acomb Library 01904 552651. Michael is also leading two screenwriting workshops. The dates for these are Friday, August 21 at Acomb Library, from 10am to 3pm or Saturday August 22 at York Library, from 10am to 3pm. Each workshop costs £30 and includes lunch. Please state any dietary requirements when phoning to book. http://www.thepress.co.uk/news/4521975.Screen_writer_Michael_Hirst_to_host_Tudor_talks_at_Acomb_Library/

German-French pubcaster Arte has nabbed "The Tudors" after the hit Showtime series failed to impress auds on German commercial web ProSieben last year. Programmers at the culture channel are hoping the sexy historical skein will titillate its more mature viewers in primetime. The pubcaster will air double episodes on Saturdays at 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 12. The Jonathan Rhys Meyers starrer debuted on ProSieben in June 2008 but generated little interest among the web's young demo, achieving only single-digit market shares. Arte has enjoyed recent hits with the BBC's "Jekyll" and French drama "Venus and Apollo." http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118006796.html?categoryid=19&cs=1
