Fassbender secures top IFTA acting honour for hard-hitting 'Hunger' role
Sunday February 15 2009
Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender stole the judge's hearts on St Valentine's night at the Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTA).
The young up-and-coming actor swept judges off their feet with his extraordinary portrayal of Bobby Sands in Hunger, directed by artist Steve McQueen (no, not the actor) .The Kerrymantook home the best film actor award for his spellbinding performance ahead of a host of Irish and international stars who had gathered at the glitzy awards ceremony in Dublin's Burlington hotel.
The win makes it two in a row for the rising star after he scooped the actor of the year award at the London Critics' Circle Awards earlier this month.
Hunger swept the boards last night taking away six awards for its dramatisation of the last days of the IRA hunger strikes. It was named best film, and also notched up an IFTA for Liam Cunningham, who was named best supporting actor. It also won awards for original score (David Holmes), production design (Tom McCullagh) and sound (Ronan Hill and Mervyn Moore).
Another big winner was The Tudors, which took six awards. The show, broadcast on TV3, was named best drama series. Director Ciaran Donnelly also won an award, as did Peter O'Toole and Maria Doyle Kennedy, who won best supporting actor and actress gongs respectively. The show also picked up awards for costume design (Joan Bergin) and make-up and hair (Sharon Doyle and Dee Corcoran).
And what would St Valentine's Day be without Kisses? The beautiful urban masterpiece won Lance Daly the award for best film director, while Hollywood sweetheart Saoirse Ronan collected the gong for best supporting film actress for her performance in Death Defying Acts.
Also in the acting categories, Eileen Walsh secured the prize for best film actress for Eden.
The best TV actor award went to Aidan Gillen for his performance in The Wire, and Charlene McKenna scooped the best TV actress gong for her performance in Raw.
Other winners on the night included In Bruges. Martin McDonagh won for best film script and also best international film.
In the TV categories, The Apprentice was named best entertainment programme, the best factual programme was awarded to In the Name of the Fada, which also took home the special Irish language award and Troid Fhuilteach (A Bloody Canvas) was awarded the IFTA for sport.
Irish voters chose Mamma Mia! star Meryl Streep for the best international actress award for her performance in the hit musical.
Among the 900 guests opting out of an intimate evening with their loved ones in return for a seat at the hottest ceremony in town were directors Neil Jordan and Jim Sheridan and actors Brendan Gleeson and Aidan Quinn.
Miriam O'Callaghan looked stunning in a floor-length emerald green gown. Keeping with the times, the RTE star said she bought her dress in the sale in Diffusion.
Another star who bought in her ''local shop'' was comedienne Deirdre O'Kane, who wore a black feather knee-length ensemble.
Amy Huberman turned heads in a cream crystal-encrusted dress by Joanne Hynes. Her Valentine's date was her father, as boyfriend Brian O'Driscoll was in Rome for Ireland's match against Italy later today.
New Podge and Rodge presenter Caroline Morahan wore an off the shoulder full-length baby-pink dress, complete with fur shawl.
Couldn't find any mention of Jonny... thought I should post this up though Peter O'Toole got an award

Rhys Meyers no-show at IFTAs due to 'family crisis' from Herald.ie. Monday Feb 15
Troubled Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers was forced to pull out of the IFTAs due to a "family crisis", the Herald can exclusively reveal.
The Golden Globe winner was due to be the big celebrity draw at the glitzy bash at the reopened Burlington hotel.
However, it has now emerged that a critical family emergency led to the Cork-born actor pulling the plug on the appearance.
His co-star in the Tudors -- which won six awards on Saturday -- has leapt to defend the hunky actor for missing the night.
Speaking after bagging the gong for Best Actress in a TV Role, Maria Doyle Kennedy told the Herald his absence was due to personal reasons.
"He couldn't be here because of a family thing. I can't say any more about it but I know that he was gutted he couldn't be here," she said.

The Tudors triumphs at the Irish Film and TV Awards

The Tudors, the TV series featuring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a young Henry VIII, was the big winner at the Irish Film and TV Awards (Iftas), held in Dublin at the weekend.

The series, screened by the BBC, collected six awards. Two of the cast, Peter O’Toole and Maria Doyle Kennedy, took the honours for best supporting actor and actress in TV roles, while the series also won awards for best TV drama and best director, as well as for costume design and best hair and make-up.
Best actor in a leading TV role went to Aidan Gillen for his performance in the much praised US series, The Wire, which has been screened on Channel 4. The award for best documentary was won by state broadcaster RTE with Bertie, a four-part analysis of the rise and fall of former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, made for the station by Steve Carson’s Mint Productions.
One half of the Father Ted team, Graham Linehan, added to his winning haul for The IT Crowd with another best script award, while Michael Fassbender, star of the Channel 4-backed film Hunger, chalked up a double, taking both the best actor and rising star accolades.
The Irish commercial station, TV3, boycotted the awards, claiming they were biased in favour of RTE and that it had never previously won in any category. However, one of its shows, the Irish version of The Apprentice, was chosen as the best entertainment programme. It had been submitted by the production company, Screentime ShinAwil http://www.thestage.co.uk/news/newsstory.php/23509/the-tudors-triumphs-at-the-irish-film-and-tv

The red carpet was rolled out for local duo Dee Corcoran and Sharon Doyle after they picked up two awards at the glitzy Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs).
Dee, of Bray, and Sharon from Greystones rubbed shoulder with the who’s who of Irish celebrities at Dublin’s five star Burlington Hotel on Saturday evening, where they took out awards for Best Hair Stylist and Best Makeup Artist respectively for their work on The Tudors.
The two beat off stiff competition from TV dramas Little Dorris and George Gently at the sixth annual IFTAs for their work on the phenomenally successful period drama, filmed at Ardmore Studios.
As if getting up close and personal with hunky Tudors actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers wasn’t enough, Sharon has also worked with Hollywood A-Lister Mel Gibson in the past while Dee has run her fingers through the hair of Julia Roberts, Liam Neeson and Cate Blanchett.
“It was a spectacular and incredibly glamourous night,” said mother-of-seven Dee.
“It is an extraordinary honour to work with such a talented cast and crew involved in The Tudors.
“We hope to be filming a fourth series in June.” http://www.wicklownews.ie/2009/02/17/looking-good/

...Jonny did not attend the Oscar Wilde bash, he shall not be attending the Oscars either. The interview with his father was done over the phone after they got his number in Spain. What he said in the interview which WASNT published is that usually if Jonny has a relapse with alcohol he gets a call from Jonny within a day or two letting him know he's ok and that ,at that time, he had not recieved that call. He went on too explain, childhood wise, that our maternal grandmother was older so Jonny and I would be best living there whilst Jamie and Paul would live with our paternal Gran who was younger and would have more energy for the task. They never lived in the UK at all. There is no family mystery at all....in fact it's very close knit. He also stated that if the article mis-quoted him it would be the last they would ever get from him.
As for Jonny...he has had a setback in his personal life which he's taking time too deal with. Our mothers death was so sudden too us that we are all dealing with it at our own pace. Himself and Reena have split up. A few months back in fact, but, are still very close...and she will always be that way with all of us. You cant love someone like they did and just walkaway and never speak again. We have cancelled a family trip too the U.S too see Jamie until april. Not because Jonny is unable but because he has too deal with things at his own pace and not feel pressured by us, his family. He knows we love him and are always there for and with him.
As an actor and a professional, Jonny is very self critical of his work on a daily basis. He knows he has a great talent and gets annoyed when he cant maximise it at times. He always wants too be as brilliant as he can...for himself, his fans, his colleagues, his director, his producer. When you strive for that it can take it's toll as was demonstrated somewhat by Christian Bale. These people give themselves over too every role and i think they lose a bit of themselves aswell. Jonny is a great brother and friend, generous too a fault, humble, funny, intelligent, and talented...but before all that he is only human and i think sometimes ,the press in particular, forget that.
He will be back in the worlds eye again soon...for now....he's trying too find the little bits of himself he's misplaced along the way. I will be sure too pass on all your regards when next we chat together :-)
